Here at Fashionable Earth, we are a fan of anything which allows us to pinch people and get away with it And, obviously a day devoted to the color green is great too! Here are some fun facts about St. Patrick’s Day:
Green is associated with St. Patrick’s Day because it is the color of Spring.
The ancient Irish used to wear green to show their love for the harvest gods.
Shamrocks are the national flower of Ireland and are picked on St. Patrick’s Day and worn on the shoulder.
Leprechauns are the official shoe makers of the fairy kingdom.
It is considered lucky to find a four leaf clover on St. Patrick’s Day.
As Los Angeles Fashion week kicks off tonight with the GenArt event, Fashionable Earth wanted to take a step back to a time when life was simpler: kindergarten. A few months ago, Hope’s Gardens, an Atlanta-based producer of fresh pesto products, was set back when flood waters came flowing into the gardens and greenhouse. The greenhouse structure still stands, although everything within it’s walls was lost. Fashionable Earth helped clean up the greenhouse as part of the first “remedial” post-flood activity. There are many people who are in need of a helping hand due to various natural disasters and we are heartened by the accomplishments we have seen from Americans who give assistance and aid. It really speaks to the power of volunteerism! Below are some before and after photos of the day we spent at the greenhouse:
At the Chanel Spring/Summer 2010 collection last year, Karl Lagerfeld staged a country fete around a barn, calling it Coco ècolo. For this year’s Fall/Winter collection, he again dabbled in “green politics” by declaring a “triumph for fake fur”.
He erected a huge iceberg in the middle of the runway, which appropriately began to melt, to go with his theme of “Global cooling,” and not global warming, adding, wisely, that “in any case, nature has its surprises.” The models wore tweeds embellished with furry decoration, knitted dresses, fur vests over the classic tweed jacket, white snowball evening bags and icicle rings. Remember Karl’s advice: “you cannot fake chic but you can be chic in fake fur.”
Suzy Amis, wife of Avatar director James Cameron, wore this eco-friendly gown at the Academy Awards which was the winning design of her “Red Carpet, Green Dress” contest she held. Each entry for the design competition was $50 which was to benefit the non-profit Muse Elementary. According to their web site, Muse encourages “ecological appreciation with ongoing action as a way of life.” Students also eat organic food, learn in a toxin-free environment, and are taught to honor all living things.
Jillian Granz (on left), a Michigan State Univesity senior majoring in apparel and textile design, won the competition. It’s a zero-waste dress — made from Ahimsa or “peace” silk, derived from cocoons without killing the silk worms inside. Suzy said that Granz’s dress was “a beautiful combination of sustainability and style. I’m excited to promote the talent of this young designer.”
You know all those coffee holders you have been saving on to from Starbucks? Time to put them to good use! The instructions are easy. After attaining the coffee holders, you can DIY:
1) Flatten out the filter and cut the right hand side to make an opening.
2) Paint the front with paint or color it with markers.
3) Paint the back, as it has ridges it is easier to just dust instead of coat the back.
4) Fold over and draw a design on the front; you can also stamp the front, as seen here – and done! You now have a card, gift tag, or even a cover for a small book.
Today is International Women’s Day, a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. At Fashionable Earth we aim to connect fashion with social justice, educating consumers about the impact they can have on both the environment and on human rights. In many places around the world, women are not yet seen as equal to men, and it is our hope to increase the awareness on women’s issues and rights.
Last year, Diane von Furstenberg created this image for a t-shirt and a tote to celebrate International Women’s Day. This year, you can purchase one of our t-shirts, benefiting women’s rights organizations. Our designs are printed on donated t-shirts, so you are able to reduce your carbon footprint and empower women worldwide at the same time!

How do you wear your American Apparel? Email us at giveaway@fashionableearth.org by March 10 with a picture and the winner will be sent a free American Apparel goodie!
Originally a workwear mainstay thanks to its durable denim fabric, the traditional jean jacket is an iconic piece that every woman and man should own. I bought my true blue wash in 2000 from the Gap, and more than a decade later, still wear it! It has accompanied me from high school to college, from the days of summer breeze to the chilling winter nights, at home and abroad. A seasonless staple like this in your closet can save you time, money, and energy worrying about what to wear. It is both classic and versatile, and can be paired with a number of various outfits, as seen here. Have a great denim jacket story to share? Email us at info@fashionableearth.org – we love hearing from our fans!
