The Oscar’s with a hint of GREEN

Suzy Amis, wife of Avatar director James Cameron, wore this eco-friendly gown at the Academy Awards which was the winning design of her “Red Carpet, Green Dress” contest she held. Each entry for the design competition was $50 which was to benefit the non-profit Muse Elementary. According to their web site, Muse encourages “ecological appreciation with ongoing action as a way of life.” Students also eat organic food, learn in a toxin-free environment, and are taught to honor all living things.

Jillian Granz (on left), a Michigan State Univesity senior majoring in apparel and textile design, won the competition. It’s a zero-waste dress — made from Ahimsa or “peace” silk, derived from cocoons without killing the silk worms inside. Suzy said that Granz’s dress was “a beautiful combination of sustainability and style. I’m excited to promote the talent of this young designer.”

Coffee Holder Card

You know all those coffee holders you have been saving on to from Starbucks? Time to put them to good use! The instructions are easy. After attaining the coffee holders, you can DIY:
1) Flatten out the filter and cut the right hand side to make an opening.
2) Paint the front with paint or color it with markers.
3) Paint the back, as it has ridges it is easier to just dust instead of coat the back.
4) Fold over and draw a design on the front; you can also stamp the front, as seen here – and done! You now have a card, gift tag, or even a cover for a small book.

International Women’s Day

Today is International Women’s Day, a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. At Fashionable Earth we aim to connect fashion with social justice, educating consumers about the impact they can have on both the environment and on human rights. In many places around the world, women are not yet seen as equal to men, and it is our hope to increase the awareness on women’s issues and rights.

Last year, Diane von Furstenberg created this image for a t-shirt and a tote to celebrate International Women’s Day. This year, you can purchase one of our t-shirts, benefiting women’s rights organizations. Monday night was the grand re-opening of Copper Willow Paper Studio! Their focus is on presenting the finest eco-luxe letterpress invitations on handmade and cotton linter papers; pressed on-site, by hand on vintage machinery.I was also able to have a few words with several of the founders of other eco-friendly businesses:Susan Thiedt of Fold Paper Flowers who creates arrangements and bouquets out of invitations and save-the-dates. Given a photo of your bouquet, she can replicate your wedding bouquet so that you will have life-long memorabilia of your wedding day.Lindee Daniel from Puridee designed these beautiful gowns which are made from peace silk rather than commercial silk. She mentioned that a percentage of each purchase is directly donated to Central City Community Outreach, a grassroots organization.Laura Fillipowicz of La Bella Gem has created marvelous pieces of jewelry out of other recycled pieces. She is able to take pieces of jewelry which have been handed down through the family and give them new life, in order for women to be able to wear their sentimental jewelry with their own special style and taste.Anna Mkhitarian of Annatarian creates lovely dresses and gowns from dresses brought to her that the customer no longer wears. Anna re-designs the dresses to fit the current style and taste of the customer. Her purpose is to create couture attire from items coming straight out of our own closets.

We would like to give a round of applause to these wonderful entrepreneurs who have taken the initiative of following their passion while looking out for the greater good of the world.
